I dragged myself and my 9-year-old-dramatic-hunger-monster into my parent's bedroom and asked if they could order pizza.
They said no.
"But can't you just taste that Italian sausage and gooey cheese??"
I mimed a cheese-pull bite, stretching my little arm as far as it could go.
"Tara," my mom sighed, "go get ready for bed." As soon as she thought I was out of earshot, she added, "Dad, go call Pizza Hut."
It was the first time I remember realizing that choosing my words—and my actions—could sell an idea.
Coincidentally, it was also the first time I understood how to tailor a message to the right audience. My mom was several months pregnant.
Turns out, selling the right idea to the right audience is a skill that stuck—so much so that I eventually was a copywriter on the Pizza Hut account. You could say that was totally a full-circle moment.
